Fife & the East Neuk

Fishing villages, food & coastal beauty

The East Neuk — the "east corner" — of Fife is a string of picturesque fishing villages along one of Scotland's most beautiful stretches of coastline. Each village has its own character, from the colourful harbours of Pittenweem to the award-winning fish and chips of Anstruther.

Crail sits at the very tip of the East Neuk, making the Honeypot the perfect base to explore this remarkable corner of Scotland. All the main villages are connected by the Fife Coastal Path and regular bus services.

The East Neuk Villages

Anstruther

3.5 miles from Crail

The largest of the East Neuk villages, famous for its award-winning fish and chips at the Anstruther Fish Bar. Also home to the excellent Scottish Fisheries Museum and the departure point for boat trips to the Isle of May.

Cellardyke

3 miles from Crail

A pretty fishing village that's essentially joined to Anstruther. Its harbour is particularly photogenic, and the walk from Crail along the coastal path is one of the best short walks in Fife.

Pittenweem

5 miles from Crail

A working fishing village with a colourful harbour and thriving arts community. The annual Pittenweem Arts Festival in August transforms the village into a massive open-air gallery.

St Monans

7 miles from Crail

Charming and atmospheric, St Monans is home to the dramatic St Monan's Kirk built right on the shoreline, and the remains of historic salt pans. The walk from Pittenweem along the coast is stunning.

Elie & Earlsferry

10 miles from Crail

Popular for its beautiful sandy beach, Elie has a wonderful beach-village atmosphere in summer. The Ship Inn is famous for its cricket matches played on the beach at low tide.

Lower Largo

15 miles from Crail

Birthplace of Alexander Selkirk, the real-life inspiration for Robinson Crusoe. A charming village with a peaceful harbour and great views across the Forth.

Food & Drink in the East Neuk

The East Neuk has become something of a food destination in recent years. Fresh seafood is the star, of course, but you'll also find excellent restaurants, farm shops, and artisan producers throughout the area.

In Crail itself, The Shoregate was recognised in the Michelin Guide 2025 — a remarkable achievement for a small village restaurant. The Nook is a lovely village cafe, and there are several other excellent options within the village.

Nearby, Anstruther Fish Bar regularly wins awards for its fish and chips, and there are excellent dining options throughout the East Neuk villages.
