Isle of May & Puffin Watching

Scotland's seabird paradise

The Isle of May is a National Nature Reserve in the Firth of Forth, accessible by boat trip from Anstruther — just 3.5 miles from Crail. Between April and September, the island is home to one of the UK's most spectacular seabird colonies, including thousands of puffins.

A puffin watching trip to the Isle of May is one of the most popular things to do from the Honeypot, and an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and families alike.

What to See on the Isle of May

Puffins

Thousands of puffins nest on the island between April and August. You can get remarkably close to these charismatic little birds — a photographer's dream.

Seabird Colonies

Beyond puffins, the island is home to guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, shags, and terns. Over 200,000 seabirds visit during breeding season.

Grey Seals

A large colony of grey seals can be seen hauled out on the rocks around the island throughout the year.

Historic Lighthouse

Scotland's first lighthouse was built on the Isle of May in 1636. The current lighthouse, designed by Robert Stevenson, dates from 1816.

12th Century Monastery

The ruins of a 12th-century Benedictine monastery sit on the western side of the island, a reminder of its long spiritual history.

Wild Flowers

In spring and summer, the island is carpeted with wildflowers including sea campion, thrift, and bird's-foot trefoil.
